Serve as collateral for gaining a better understanding of the child
A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shrivelled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shrivelled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Life's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. Remember nature needs no help, just no interference. There are processes of life, things we all go through. The struggles are a part of our journey and are preparing us for what awaits. They are preparing us to fly.

My Approach

Life experiences and the learning opportunities I was exposed to, contributed to my world view that every individual has the potential to grow and achieve all they are capable of being – they hold the answer to their own growth. To fully realise this potential, they may need someone to come alongside them, and help them find and reconnect with their own inner wisdom.
Every individual is unique. We may be shaped by our past experiences, but we are not defined by these.
They offer valuable opportunities for growth and are essential to allow us to be fully whole and function at our own optimal level. Every individual has the ability to make a constructive choice to use their own unique experiences in order to allow for this optimal functioning.
I draw on an eclectic approach where I attempt to match the client’s needs with a particular therapeutic modality. I use my professional training to assess which is the best fit for the person based on where they are in their own life’s journey.
I have a deep passion for working with children and have a fully equipped play room where I make use of various play techniques to engage therapeutically with children and guide them to experience a constructive and integrated sense of self. I employ these techniques to gain a better understanding of the child and his/her world in order to assist them in whatever has brought them to this point in their lives that requires an intervention – trauma, bullying, anxiety, parents’ divorce, etc. I then guide parents to optimise the parent-child fit to contribute to a happier family dynamic whether a single parent, divorced or blended family system. Where and when necessary, these play techniques may even be used with adult clients to break though subconscious defences.
What my clients say
I was at my wits end by the time I took my girls to Sharon (she was recommended to me by my therapist Kailas Kassan). (The girls had attended therapy sessions for the past two years with another therapist.) She has been a real blessing in my life. She has given me and my girls the necessary tools in order to have a better communication, respect and understanding with each other which in turns harvests a better relationship all around. We attended three sessions with Sharon and there has been an improvement all around with the relationships the girls have with me, my parents, my siblings, the teachers etc. and they have gotten better results in their school work and madrassa.
I came to know Sharon in 2017 after my son had a brain injury and our family needed a little help adjusting to new circumstances and different behaviours. As a mom of 6 children, it was comforting to know that Sharon shared our Catholic faith, and that she understood the challenges and joys of a large family. In a gentle, no-nonsense way, Sharon helped me to define boundaries. We live 1 ½ hours outside Cape Town, and I have taken three of my children back over the last 2 years during difficult times for counsel and guidance. She has an excellent rapport with the children and they just love coming to play at ‘Aunty Sharon’. Her techniques and expertise in Play Therapy unlock problems and decode solutions that are sometimes hard to see. She has also encouraged and empowered me personally, and as a parent on our family journey. I can highly recommend Sharon as a counsellor and Play Therapist.
